One Minor Adjustment Can Make a Big Difference

A quick story if you will let me… I like to golf as a means of getting fresh air, spending time with my fiancé and friends, and just for the enjoyment of the competition (against myself). I am not a good golfer. In fact, I got rid of my driver many years ago because all I did was hit the ball 225 yards to the right or left; rarely did I hit it on the fairway. So I switched to using an iron instead of the driver; I had more control and the ball didn’t go so far off to the side.

Last week I decided to go out and buy a new driver – an oversized one; I figured with a bigger club head I had a better chance of hitting the ball correctly. I did buy a new driver, but the difference came when I got a little tip on my grip. The sales person/instructor had me adjust my hands ever so slightly. WOW! What a difference! I went to the driving range Friday and I actually hit the ball straight most of the time. I had a golf outing on Saturday, and for the first time I felt confident as I was driving to the golf course. I don’t mean to brag, but when we started to play I was actually hitting the ball straight (for the most part) and far (300 yards).  SUCCESS!

Now what does this have to do with coaching? That little tip by the sales person gave me the confidence in myself that I could actually hit the ball straight with the right grip. That sales person was like a coach to me. His tip gave me a new attitude…a positive attitude toward golfing. I was energized and motivated to be successful. I took my time, visualized what I had to do, and then it happened. A coach does the same things for their clients; we help you make the right adjustments, give you the right tools, energize you, motivate you, and celebrate with you on your successes.
