Momentum and Coaching
One of my coaching clients (I'll call him Joe) today used a great term to describe what is happening to his process of change. Joe said, "I have some great momentum going on right now and I want to keep it going!" After thinking about the session, I knew this was the topic for today...Momentum.
Momentum is defined by Merriam Webster as a strength or force gained by motion or through the development of events. This is exactly what happens in coaching - a strength gained through the development of events. What strength is Joe gaining? He is gaining confidence, a more positive attitude, and pride for accomplishing tasks when he said he will.
How does coaching develop momentum? Each week Joe agrees to a goal he wishes to accomplish. This goal is meant to be something that can realistically be accomplished. After our coaching session Joe feeds off of my energy and positivity and is energized to go forth and accomplish his goal. Once his goal is met and Joe meets with me again, he is proud to inform me of his success. This pride gives Joe more energy and motivation to work on the next task; and the cycle continues. The successful development of these events is where Joe gains strength...and confidence.
Discussion:
Is momentum working for you or against you? Do you feel you are climbing an uphill battle or are you cruising downhill because the momentum is in your favor? Would you like to get some of this positive momentum? Let me know of your situation, and I can inform you of how a coaching relationship can help you.
