Summarize Summer
This is the last week of summer. Labor Day is just around the corner and then it is back to school for the little ones. How was your summer? Did you have goals set in the beginning of summer of what you wanted to accomplish? Did you vacation a lot and have lots of fun? Or was it the same old thing, just a different time of the year?
I can summarize my summer in just one word ---- AWESOME! We started the summer off going to Disney World, then visited family in N.C., took a long weekend going to a fun and reviving conference in Maryland, and capped it off with a week out in CA. Between all of that we visited both sides of our family and played LOTS of golf (at least lots for us).
Yes we had some goals set for things we wanted to accomplish around the house before the school year started back up. And yes we did accomplish some of them and didn't accomplish some of them. So do I look at this summer as a success or failure? I could look at it like a failure since I didn't accomplish all of my goals. If I were to look at things just as black and white I might view it this way. But there is lots of color in my world!
As my fiancé was getting ready for her first day back at the University she teaches, she appeared very stressed. "I can't believe the semester is starting tomorrow!", she said. "There was so much more I wanted to do." I explained to her that we shouldn't look at the negative side of what wasn't accomplished and look at all of the good we did accomplish. Sure there were some things I wanted to get finished too, but the lack of completing those tasks wasn't going to make me stressed out now. We must look forward with our thinking. We must look at the good we have done and the good we still have yet to do. I reminded her of all of the things we did accomplish and how our family (which is us and her daughter) grew closer and closer.
So I pass this on to you; if your summer wasn't as "successful" as you would have liked it to have been, look at what successes you had. Feel good about what you have accomplished. Feel good about what lies ahead of you. If you need help keeping these types of things in perspective, give me a shout, I would be happy to help you.
