Cancer Risks Affected by Weight...

ABC News has reported today that "after five years of reviewing 7,000 medical studies, a team of top scientists from around the world has concluded that diet and weight directly affect whether you'll get cancer. The researchers cite "convincing" evidence that excess body fat can cause six different types of common cancers, including those affecting the breast, bowel and pancreas. The research, which also links consumption of alcohol, red meat and processed meat to an increased risk of cancer, has spurred debate among nutrition experts over whether the conclusions of the report are particularly earth-shattering."

Here are the recommendations:

1. Limit Body Fat: Weight around the midsection is the most dangerous. It is recommended to keep your BMI (Body Mass Index) between 18.5 and 24.9.

2. Limit Red Meat to 2.5 oz./day: This is about the size of a deck of cards. Of course, if you enjoy a nice 8 oz. steak you have the option of eating your steak one day and forfeiting red meat the next 2 days.

3. Limit Alcohol: Men are limited to 2 drinks a day and women are limited to 1 drink a day.

4. Limit Salt Intake to 2 grams/day: This is approximately a teaspoon full. Avoid processed food, certain frozen meals, and many types of lunch meat; they are very high in salt, especially ham.

5. Get Nutrients from Whole Foods: Vitamin supplements don't do as good a job as getting the nutrients naturally.

6. Mother's Should Breast Feed Children: I'm assuming they mean newborn babies.

Of course, with any study that comes out you have to take the results with caution. I highly recommend speaking with your doctor before you go and radically change your eating habits.
