Q: Can Diet Soda Make You Fat? A: YES and NO

Can diet soda make you fat?

According to a new study that I saw on Good Morning America today the answer is YES. Here is a link to their web site with the results and discussion of that study (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/story?id=4271246&page=1). But before you take the results of this study as gospel I want you to read another study and read my thoughts on this below. The second study is called Artificial Sweeteners Helpful in Weight Control and can be found here (http://www.scientificblogging.com/news_releases/study_artificial_sweeteners_helpful_in_weight_control).

My thoughts on this topic:
First I would like to summarize and give my interpretation of the first study...Artificial Sweeteners Can Make You Fat. The study said that when your body ingests something sweet it is "looking" for calories and when your body doesn't get the calories, your metabolism gets messed up; even if you drink just 1 diet soda a day. I think this could potentially be true if, and only if, you are drinking the diet soda by itself and aren't ingesting any other calories. So my question to the researchers is, "If I drink a diet soda with lunch does it have the same effect?" Now I know plenty of people who drink a diet soda for breakfast and nothing else. Here I can see your metabolism being affected. I know some people who only drink a diet soda for breakfast and lunch and don't eat any food until dinner; I can see them really being effected. But if you drink one diet drink with a meal, where you are ingesting calories, I'm not sure the metabolism will be affected. This is just my opinion. Don't take it as fact.

The second study...Artificial Sweeteners Helpful in Weight Control, is very interesting. I highly suggest you read it. I love the last paragraph so I am going to paste it here. “Rising obesity rates have now been linked to the presence of sugars in the food supply and to the absence of sugars from the food supply,” noted Drewnowski. “Consumers find it difficult to know who to believe. In the final analysis, all health experts agree that weight loss is best achieved by a combination of reducing caloric intake, lowering energy density of the diet, and increasing physical activity.

So it comes down to something that has been said time and time again; reduce calories, increase physical activity, and watch the type of foods you eat.

I would love to hear feedback on this topic. I'm sure many of you have opinions on both sides of this. Feel free to comment, you don't even have to leave your name if you don't want.

I don't know if its making a difference or not, but I've cut one sometimes 2 diet sodas a day from my diet. I now just have one with my lunch during the week, and try to only have one a day on the weekends too.
